Class of 2012 helping at the Olympics

A number of postgraduate and recent graduates will be helping at London 2012 during the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Those from Sport and Exercise Sciences include Karla Ratcliffe and Jack Mercer who are driving International Olympic Committee (IOC) members, including the Head of Cycling, in the golden BMWs on the special Olympic designated road lanes. A different role for one young man is helping with security in the Olympic Park as part of his duties as a member of the Territorial Army while Mei Yi (Daphne) Wu is assisting with security when people arrive.

Not everyone is in central London. Becca Todd, with excellent Spanish language skills, will be looking after the Colombian Ladies Football team members, initially in Glasgow and Newcastle. She has already met some of the coaching staff when they came to London in April for the team draws. Ollie Marriott is a court attendant at Wimbledon and Vicky Rogers has a paid role at the National Sailing Academy at Portland working with the international sailing teams.

Ben Robertson has a paid role helping with transport arrangements based in central London. While Jessica Guest will also be in Weymouth working with RELAYS and students from Bristol and Bournemouth universities. They will organise sports activities on the beach each day for young people.

Several people will be supporting the Paralympics including Brett Richmond and Ciara O’Brien. Brett will be working in the Excel Centre while Ciara is responsible for transport-and is hoping the rain will stop so she is not permanently soaked!

Gwyneth Leonard, the RELAYS Business Fellow at the University said:

“All the students and graduates are very excited to be part of the Olympic and Paralympic Games 2012. They have had their training and their uniforms and they just want to start meeting and greeting visitors whether they are athletes, officials or members of the public.

This is a unique opportunity and something that they will be able to talk about for the rest of their lives.”

Date: 24 July 2012
