Exeter climbs up global 100 for Life Sciences

The University of Exeter has cemented its position among the very best universities in the world for Life Sciences.

The subject now ranks 82nd in the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) Life Sciences Rankings 2015-16, up from 99th last year – a climb of 17 places. Exeter ranked at number 15 in the UK, up two places from 17, in a year when the country topped the national tables for the first time.

The Life Sciences ranking assesses the top 100 Universities in the world in this field. They are analysed across 13 performance indicators in a wide range of activity, encompassing teaching, research quality and the international influence of research, international outlook and industry income.

The news comes after the University broke into the overall THE World University Rankings global 100 for the first time, at number 93.

Professor Steve Thornton, Dean of the University of Exeter Medical School, said: “This excellent news reflects the dedication, hard work and talent of a wide range of students and staff across the University.”

Professor Dan Charman, Dean of University’s College of Life and Environmental Sciences, said: “This excellent news is testimony to the fact that Life Sciences at Exeter has gone from strength to strength, and we’re continuing that trajectory with ambitious initiatives such as our upcoming Living Systems Institute, which will strengthen all subjects by bringing disciplines together to collaboratively work towards a better understanding and treatment of disease. It’s an incredibly exciting time to be part of Exeter’s ongoing success.”

Life Sciences encompasses a wide range of subjects across the University, broadly relating to human and animal biology, medical and behavioural science and geography and environmental studies.

Earlier this year, Exeter was named The Times and The Sunday Times Sports University of the Year 2016, in recognition of the high quality of its sporting performance, research and education in fields related to sport.
