Rhys Banks
PhD Student

Having completed my four-year undergraduate degree in ‘Exercise and Sport Sciences with Study Abroad’ at the University of Exeter (and Coastal Carolina University, USA) in 2017, I decided to pursue a career in academia and research further. Originally, my plan was to complete an MSc by Research in the Children’s Health and Exercise Research Centre (CHERC), under the supervision of Dr. Bert Bond. However, a fantastic opportunity arose at Exeter in the form of the Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship for Postgraduate Research. This scholarship would provide me with full funding for 3.5 years, whilst working towards PhD completion. With the support of Dr. Bert Bond and Dr. Alan Barker, I was successful with my application and will now be working towards PhD completion by 2020/2021.

My PhD is looking at ‘Exercise interventions for the improvement of peripheral and cerebral vascular health across the lifespan’. I will be looking at the magnitude of the effect of exercise and how this differs between age groups. I am supervised by Dr. Bert Bond and Dr. Alan Barker at Exeter and I am also fortunate enough to have secured an international collaboration with the University of British Columbia in Canada, meaning that I am also supervised by Assoc. Professor Ali McManus. I am happy to discuss my work with anyone, so please approach me if you have any questions.

Broad research specialisms

More broadly, I am interested in cardiovascular physiology, muscle physiology, as well as neuromuscular physiology, having completed my undergraduate dissertation with Paul Morgan looking at ‘Neuromuscular and muscle metabolic responses to contralateral limb fatigue’. I am also interested in the specifics of exercise intensity, and what role intensity specifically plays in improving parameters of health.
