Project Title: The influence of participant characteristics on blood vessel function following consumption of a sugary drink.

Supervisors: Dr. Bert Bond & Dr. Alan Barker

Project Description:

Habitual consumption of sugary drinks is linked to chronic cardiometabolic disease, such as atherosclerosis and diabetes, and these diseases are known to originate in youth. Adolescents in the UK consume more than 8 times the recommended maximum amount of sugar per day from sugary drinks alone. Furthermore, evidence is available which demonstrates that habitual sugary drink consumption in this age group increases when schools ban sugary drinks on site. Thus, the primary aim of this investigation is to understand how participant characteristics such as physical activity, fitness and fatness influence the vascular response to a typical sugary drink in adolescents.
