Chris Byrne - Lecturer
In 2009 Chris travelled to South Africa to collaborate with Tim Noakes and colleagues at the University of Cape Town / MRC Research Unit for Exercise Science and Sports Medicine. Their research measured body temperature in runners throughout the 56 km Two Oceans and 89 km Comrades ultra-marathons by using ingestible telemetric sensors. Chris has previously collaborated with Singapore’s Defence Medical and Environmental Research Institute to measure body temperature and fluid balance in runners throughout half and full-marathons in Singapore’s hot and humid climate. This research is revealing the nature of body temperature responses to mass-participation distance running in real-world environments and is furthering our understanding of this vital homeostatic variable. The School's environmental chamber allows Chris to explore these issues further by simulating hot and cold environments in the laboratory. Chris is the Programme Director and contact for the Human Biosciences BSc degree programme. E-mail address: C.Byrne@exeter.ac.uk |
