Students make England U20s women's rugby team

Three students from the University of Exeter have been selected for the England under 20s women’s rugby team.

Sarah George, Amber Reed and Lucy Demaine, all sports scholars, have joined this year’s squad.

Sarah is a second-year Exercise and Sport Science student who was also selected for the squad last year. Amber is a first-year Exercise and Sport Science student, while Lucy is a medical student at the Peninsula Medical School. Lucy was formerly captain of the England under 18s team.

Lucy, 18, who has been playing rugby since she was six years old after seeing other children play the sport in her home town of Liskeard, commented: “We are all delighted to have been selected for the under 20s squad. We all play for the University of Exeter team and we will now be spending weekends training for the national squad.”

Their first match will be against France on 27th February next year.

Nick Beasant, Assistant Director of Sport (Performance & Competitions) is delighted with the selections. He said: “To gain international recognition is a fantastic accolade for any athlete, and to have three students selected from our Women’s Rugby High Performance Programme positively reflects on both the players themselves as well as the coaching team led by Mark Tomlinson, Director of Women’s Rugby. Mark’s close work with RFUW lead coach Kevin Moggridge and the University’s developing relationship with the NGB itself is certainly paying dividends at this level of the women’s game.”
