Staff from various organisations will give careers advice to Sports and Health Science students.

Top of the league sports personalities to give students tips for success

The man in charge of the record-breaking British Paralympics team is one of a host of sports experts set to offer top tips to Exeter students.

Staff from a variety of sports organisations are preparing to give inspirational careers advice to Sports and Health Science students at a careers day on Friday 10 February.

Among them is honorary graduate Tim Hollingsworth, the man in charge of preparing and selecting Britain’s gold medal winning Paralympic team, who graduated from The University of Exeter in 1990.

Following Hollingsworth’s keynote speech, a panel of alumni guest speakers will also share the stories behind their success at an event that is open to Sports and Health Sciences students at the University of Exeter.

The Chief Executive of the British Paralympic Association (BPA) is responsible for the overall selection, preparation and management of the ParalympicsGB Team, as well as the promotion of the Paralympic movement in the UK. During his time as CEO, the British team have enjoyed some of their most successful Games ever, bringing back 147 medals in the 2016 Rio games. Hollingsworth was recently awarded an OBE in recognition of these achievements.

Other alumni guest speakers include the Academy Manager of Bristol Rugby, the Head of Club Development for RFU, the Research Manager of Fitflop and representatives from Sports Management Santara Group. A Strength and Conditioning Coach who works at the University will also be attending.

Jayde Kirby, Employability Manager for the College of Life and Environmental Sciences, which covers Sports and Health Sciences, said: “We have incredibly successful alumni working in the sports sector and they have kindly agreed to share their advice to our current students, for which we are all very grateful.

“I would encourage all Sports and Health Sciences students to attend this event. It is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about the sector and discuss it with some of the leaders in this field.”

Sport and Health Sciences at Exeter maintains an international reputation for excellence in teaching and research, resulting in a number of former students excelling in the industry.

An Employers Fair and drop-in sessions in the Forum will be taking place after the talks. Students will be able to ask questions and talk to the speakers along with representatives from other graduate recruiters such as CP&R, Ernst and Young, the Kings Foundation, QuintilesIMS and the University of Exeter.

The Sports and Health Sciences Careers Day talks will take place in the Great Hall on Friday 10 February from 9:30am. Following this the Employers Fair and drop-in sessions will take place in the Forum from 12:30pm.
