I am currently completing a BSc undergraduate degree in Sport and Exercise Science at the University of Bath. For my third year of study, I am completing a professional placement as a research assistant at the Children’s Health and Exercise Research Centre (CHERC), based at the University of Exeter, after which I will return to Bath for the fourth and final year of my course. My decision to apply for the placement position at CHERC was influenced by my interest in physiology whilst studying at Bath, both in lectures, specifically those on the immune system and on nutrition/metabolism, and in practical labs where I gained skills such as taking capillary blood samples and assessing volume and content of expired gases. During my placement at Exeter, I will be assisting both Masters and PhD students, as well as other academics in the paediatric field, in their research. Such exposure to this post-graduate level of research will further develop my lab based skills in new areas such as Transcranial Doppler Ultrasound and Flow Mediated Dilation, as well as improve my academic writing and understanding of the science in this field.
