Description - summary of the module content

Module description

On this module you will learn about identifying and assessing factors that may affect performance and well being in sport. Coupled with a critical understanding of sport psychology theories, you will then be able to describe what could be done to enhance performance, studying a variety of techniques from goal-setting to imagery.

Module aims - intentions of the module

The aims of this module are to develop a critical understanding of specific sport psychology theories and concepts. This module uses evidence-based practice to help to develop your problem solving and strategic thinking skills so that you can see how sport psychology could be used in the real world to both improve performance and facilitate well being.

Graduate attributes. As part of this module you are expected to develop the following skills:

  • Strategic thinking and problem solving in answering questions and completeting independent study.
  • Application of knowledge in interpreting empirical research.
  • Building confidence as a communicator in discussing independent study and literature in seminar settings.
  • People skills in communicating with peers and module teaching team.
  • Enquiring mind in pursuing further reading on topics covered in the module.
  • Data management skills in collecting and recording data and analysing findings in seminars and independent study.

  • Stress and anxiety
  • Arousal and activation
  • Self-confidence

Psychological skills, including:

  • Goal-setting
  • Motivation

  • Designing and implementing a psychological intervention

Re-assessment notes

Deferral – if you miss an assessment for certificated reasons judged acceptable by the Mitigation Committee, you will normally be either deferred in the assessment or an extension may be granted. The mark given for a re-assessment taken as a result of deferral will not be capped and will be treated as it would be if it were your first attempt at the assessment.

Referral – if you have failed the module overall (i.e. a final overall module mark of less than 40%) you will be required to submit a further essay as necessary. If you are successful on referral, your overall module mark will be capped at 40%.
