Description - summary of the module content
Module description
The Professional Development Experience module provides students on a taught MSc programme in Sport and Health Sciences with the opportunity to undertake an internship related to providing applied sports science support to a recognised partner, such as the University of Exeter Sports Park High Performance Unit or sports club.
During the internship, you will take responsibility for providing one or more aspects of applied sports science support such as strength and conditioning and performance testing and analysis. The tasks that you work on will vary from project to project, but may initially include a general induction to the role, administrative tasks, and shadowing an experienced applied sports scientist or strength and conditioning coach. As you gain experience you may have the opportunity to progress to more advanced tasks and gain additional responsibility, including developing and leading with the delivery of sport science support sessions and data analysis, management and communication. This module is especially recommended if you are considering a career in applied sports science.
Acceptance into this module is competitive and by agreement with the module leader and identification of an appropriate provider of the internship and internship supervisor. Whilst completing the internship, you are expected to achieve a satisfactory level of academic progression (e.g. achieving a pass grade or above on modules aligned to your MSc programme) and demonstrate a strong enthusiasm for applied sports science.
The module enables you to undertake up to 150 hours of applied sport science work which may run throughout the year or in a discrete block of time.
This module and its credits does not contribute towards degree progression or award calculation.
Module aims - intentions of the module
The aim of the module is to improve your skills, knowledge and experience of delivering sport science support to an appropriate end-user. The module is designed to enhance your employability by developing a clearer sense of the nature of a career in applied sports science, the development of skills and knowledge relevant to a career in applied sports science and evidence of these achievements.

Regular meetings are held with your internship supervisor throughout the module. The internship supervisor will ensure that any necessary training is delivered in a timely fashion and that you receive an induction on your first day. Supervisors will meet regularly with you throughout the internship to ensure that you are adequately supported and that you have the opportunity to gain valuable skills and experiences. Supervisors will schedule a review session that will coincide with the midway point of the internship to discuss the progress of the internship. In addition, a termly meeting will be held with the module convenor to discuss the internship.

Re-assessment notes
Deferral – if you miss an assessment for certificated reasons judged acceptable by the Mitigation Committee, you will normally be either deferred in the assessment or an extension may be granted. The mark given for a re-assessment taken as a result of deferral will not be capped and will be treated as it would be if it were your first attempt at the assessment.
Referral – if you have failed the module overall (i.e. a final overall module mark of less than 50%) you will be required to redo the relevant assessment as required. If you are successful on referral, your overall module mark will be capped at 50%.
