2. Description of the Programme

The MSci (Hons) Exercise and Sport Sciences programme is designed to give you a balanced understanding of both sport and exercise sciences across the range of sub-disciplines. This is delivered through learning about the psychology, physiology and biomechanics of sport and exercise, with a focus on research that permeates throughout all Stages. Optional modules reflect the application of this scientific knowledge in a variety of populations from athletes, children, and clinical groups to the general public. Alongside the subject specific knowledge, there is also a commitment to enhancing your learning and personal development skills.

The final year of the programme provides you with an opportunity to develop a higher level of analytical and technical expertise by completing a bespoke research skills development module and undertaking a comprehensive research project by working with staff and PhD students from our leading research groups.

3. Educational Aims of the Programme

The MSci (Hons) Exercise and Sport Sciences will provide you with a comprehensive and contemporary programme of study and is intended to:

  • Provide you with knowledge and understanding across a range of sub-disciplines within Exercise and Sport Sciences.
  • Enhance teaching and learning through research and applied practice derived from exercise and sport.
  • Provide you with the opportunity to employ theoretical concepts in applied exercise and sport settings.
  • Enable you to acquire a range of transferable skills to allow them to develop as autonomous and reflective individuals.
  • Provide you with the necessary skills and knowledge to undertake a significant research project whilst working alongside our leading research groups.

The main aim of the programme will be to provide you with a sound theoretical understanding of how the disciplines of physiology, psychology and biomechanics can be used to improve health or enhance performance in a variety of populations, including children, clinical group, athletes and the general public. You will also have the opportunity to specialise in related modules such as sport and exercise nutrition, physical education and business. Given that the programme is focussed on cutting-edge research, you will be provided with a solid foundation in how to design, analyse and interpret research. In the final year of the programme a bespoke research skills development module will enable you to develop postgraduate level research skills and knowledge, providing you with the necessary foundation to work alongside our leading research groups to complete your dissertation research project. The goal of the research project is to produce a substantial body of work that may be suitable to submit for publication to an academic journal.  An opportunity to attend a suitable academic conference as a delegate will also be provided, enabling you to further develop your academic expertise and networking opportunities.

You may take optional modules as long as any necessary prerequisites have been satisfied, where the timetable allows and if you have not already taken the module in question or an equivalent module.

You may take elective modules up to 30 credits outside of the programme in stages 2, 3 and, 4 as long as any necessary prerequisites have been satisfied, where the timetable allows and if you have not already taken the module in question or an equivalent module.

You are also permitted to take the five-credit module ESS3910 Professional Development Experience in the second or third year. Registration on this module is subject to a competitive application process. If taken, this module will not count towards progression or award calculation.

7. Programme Regulations

Programme-specific Progression Rules

To progress to Stage 3 you must achieve a credit-weighted stage average of at least 60% in Stage 2, otherwise you will be required to transfer to the relevant three year BSc programme.

Programme-specific Award Rules

At the end of Stage 3, you may be permitted to exit with a BSc (Hons) Exercise and Sport Sciences provided that you have achieved 360 credits in total, you have taken no more than 150 credits at level 4 and at least 90 credits at level 6 or 7. If you do exit with a BSc (Hons) the award will normally be based on the degree mark formed from the credit weighted average marks for stages 2 and 3 combined in the ratio 1:2 respectively.

8. College Support for Students and Students' Learning

You will be based in Sport and Health Sciences, you will be allocated a Personal Tutor on arrival and can expect reasonable access to all teaching staff for academic tutorials through appointments. There is also a Programme Director for the MSci (Hons) in Exercise and Sport Sciences who follows the cohort from stage 1 through to graduation and who will monitor student absences and progress, and meet any students needing additional support. In addition, the Programme Director will offer support and advice to all students on a programme and a dedicated careers and employability tutor to co-ordinate the interaction between you, careers service and the discipline.

You will have access to the Seminar Speaker Series where leading researchers are invited to give research seminars.

Student/Staff Liaison Committee enables students and staff to jointly participate in the management and review of the teaching and learning provision. The Student/Staff Liaison Committee in Sport and Health Sciences meets termly and is chaired by a student representative.

11. Regulation of Assessment and Academic Standards

Each academic programme in the University is subject to an agreed College assessment and marking strategy, underpinned by institution-wide assessment procedures.

The security of assessment and academic standards is further supported through the appointment of External Examiners for each programme. External Examiners have access to draft papers, course work and examination scripts. They are required to attend the Board of Examiners and to provide an annual report. Annual External Examiner reports are monitored at both College and University level. Their responsibilities are described in the University's code of practice.
