Dr Martin Jones
Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Psychology

I am a senior lecturer in sport and exercise psychology. I am broadly interested in crafting innovate and engaging teaching and learning practices and developing research-informed teaching in sport and exercise science.

I completed my undergraduate degree in sport and exercise sciences at Leeds Metropolitan University and my MSc and Ph.D. in sport and exercise sciences at Loughborough University. Following my graduate studies, I completed a post-doctoral research fellowship in sport psychology at the University of Alberta, Canada. Prior to joining the University of Exeter, I was a senior lecturer in sport and exercise psychology at the University of Gloucestershire.  I have received several teaching awards and was nominated for a Higher Education Academy (HEA) national teaching fellowship.

In addition to my teaching and research interests, I am an associate fellow and a chartered member of the BPS, a chartered scientist,  and an HCPC registered sport and exercise psychologist.  I have provided sport and exercise psychology services to athletes, coaches, national governing bodies, and business organisations in the both the UK and Canada.

Broad research specialisms:

I am sport and exercise psychologist with an interest in psychosocial aspects of youth sport and physical activity, including adolescent’s development of life skills and facilitating positive youth development through sport. I am also interested in performance psychology, particularly the correlates and consequences of mental toughness and the predictors of pain experiences and pain-related outcomes in athletes. I have received advanced training in both qualitative and quantitative research methods and publish research using both research paradigms.

Broad Teaching Specialisms

I adopt a unique approach that centres on four fundamental principles: To create environments that help students and colleagues to express ideas and opinions in a way that is faithful to their values, to help people to feel supported so that they can trust others and be part of a team of learners, to improve skills, and to help people to meet challenges.  The results of my approach have been consistent awards for teaching excellence and colleague support. I have also received university teaching fellowships and have been nominated twice for an HEA National Teaching Fellowship.

Beyond my current role, I coordinate a network for academics in teaching-focused roles in Sport and Exercise Psychology and I am a member of the JISC Student Experience Experts Group.
