Description - summary of the module content

Module description

This is a specialist module on human performance and physiological exercise testing. A pre-requisite for this module is good understanding of undergraduate level exercise physiology. A major feature of the learning and teaching methods in this module will be the active encouragement of laboratory work. The majority of this module will take place in the laboratory utilising techniques not necessarily previously available to undergraduate students. Part of the learning and teaching strategy will include practical class participation and this may include exercise from time to time.

Module aims - intentions of the module

This module aims to develop your understanding on laboratory techniques utilised in physiology research laboratories. The module will be research-driven and will benefit from recent and ongoing research of Lecturers involved in the module.

By the completion of this module you will have an understanding of different laboratory techniques, collection and subsequent analysis of data and interpretation of results. In addition, through your participation in this module you will expand your skill set and acquire practical skills that are required in your career.

  • Introduction to module, rationale, assessment and Health and Safety
  • Determination of autonomic function
  • Assessment of vascular function
  • Assessment of neuromuscular function
  • The power-time relationship
  • Muscle bioenergetics
  • Reliability and validity of laboratory techniques
  • Lactate threshold
  • Respiratory gas exchange and incremental exercise
  • Oxygen uptake kinetics
  • Exercise physiology in practice: scientific support

Re-assessment notes

Deferral – if you miss an assessment for certificated reasons judged acceptable by the Mitigation Committee, you will normally be either deferred in the assessment or an extension may be granted. The mark given for a re-assessment taken as a result of deferral will not be capped and will be treated as it would be if it were your first attempt at the assessment.

Referral – if you have failed the module overall (i.e. a final overall module mark of less than 50%) you will be required to sit a further examination. If you are successful on referral, your overall module mark will be capped at 50%.
