Dr Anni Vanhatalo
Associate Professor of Exercise Physiology

Dr Anni Vanhatalo is an Associate Professor in Exercise Physiology. She gained a PhD in Exercise Physiology from the University of Wales Aberystwyth and subsequently spent four years as a postdoctoral fellow in Exeter before taking up a lectureship in 2011. She has established expertise on the power-duration relationship of human bioenergetics, the muscle metabolic determinants of exercise tolerance and prediction of high-intensity exercise performance. Her recent work, in collaboration with Exeter MR Research Unit, utilises nuclear magnetic resonance techniques to investigate skeletal muscle oxygenation, blood flow and metabolism in response to dietary manipulation of nitric oxide bioavailability.

Broad research specialisms:

  • Prediction of high-intensity exercise tolerance
  • Critical power testing and modelling
  • Dietary nitrate supplementation
  • Skeletal muscle bioenergetics
  • Physiological responses to manipulation of inspired O2 fraction
