Dr Dimitris Vlachopoulos

Profile

Dimitris joined the Children’s Health and Exercise Research Centre (CHERC) in 2012 to complete his MSc in Paediatric Exercise and Health supported by Greek State Scholarships Foundation (IKY). He undertook his PhD on the impact of different loading sports and a jumping intervention on bone health in adolescent males under supervision of Dr Luis Gracia-Marco, Dr Alan Barker and Prof Craig Williams.

Dimitris completed the National Training Scheme for Bone Densitometry organized by the National Osteoporosis Society and received a DXA Scanning Honorary Practitioner position at Derriford Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust (Healthy Bones Department Services) receiving competency to work without supervision to perform DXA scans.His PhD was supported by European Commission (Marie Curie 7th CIG) and published in internationally recognised journals such as the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport and BMC Public Health.

Throughout the years, Dimitris was awarded with two New Investigator Awards from International Conference of Children’s Bone Health (ICCBH) and International Congress of Physical Education and Sport Sciences (ICPESS), as well as he obtained the Postgraduate Research Enhancement Fund to attend the National Training Scheme for Bone Densitometry of National Osteoporosis Society, and aslo obtained travel bursaries from Bone Research Society (BRS) to attend national and international conferences (BRS and ECTS).

His current postdoctoral research is continuing his work on longitudinal changes in bone mass, geometry and metabolism in adolescents engaged in osteogenic and non-osteogenic sports, and he is interested to investigate the fracture prevalence and bone development according to the sport practised during growth.
